Kathmandu.  For the first time in Nepal, an oral and maxillofacial hospital dedicated to all types of complex surgeries related to the mouth, teeth, jaw and face is to be built. This hospital, which is to be built in the Chabahil area of Kathmandu, is believed to bring great relief and new hope to Nepali patients who have been forced to go abroad for years due to lack of specialized treatment.

This hospital, which is to be built at the initiative of ON Samaj Dental Hospital, which has been active in the field of dental health for a long time, is expected to take a historic leap in oral and maxillofacial treatment services in Nepal. Although some health institutions, including Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, have been providing maxillofacial services to a limited extent before, this is the first time a state-of-the-art and specialist hospital dedicated entirely to this service is to be established in Nepal.

World-class treatment in complex mouth, teeth, jaw and face surgeries is now available in the country
The hospital’s senior oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. According to Subash Ghimire, the number of patients with facial injuries, jaw fractures due to road and industrial accidents, oral cancer, intraoral tumors, serious infections, and congenital malformations is increasing in Nepal.

“These complex problems cannot be treated by general dentists or general surgeons,” says Dr. Ghimire. “For this, a specially trained maxillofacial surgeon, state-of-the-art equipment, and a hospital with complete infrastructure are essential.”

According to him, in recent years, many Nepali patients with such complex problems have been forced to seek extremely expensive treatment in India, Thailand, and other third countries. The burden of treatment costs, accommodation, travel, and time has put many families in great financial and mental distress.

“Now, the obligation of Nepalese people to go abroad for treatment will be eliminated,” said Dr. Ghimire. “We will be able to provide safe, affordable, and international-standard maxillofacial services in Nepal.”

What is oral and maxillofacial surgery?

Dr. According to Subash Ghimire, oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the most complex and advanced branches of dentistry and modern surgery. It treats serious problems related to the facial bones, jaws, tissues inside the mouth, teeth and facial structures.

This service includes treatment of facial injuries and broken jaws, deep infections of the mouth and jaw, surgery for cancers and tumors of the mouth and face, tissue and bone reconstruction, orthognathic surgery to correct facial bone imbalances, complex dental implants and full facial reconstruction.

According to Dr. Ghimire, such a service has become very necessary for Nepal due to the increasing incidence of traffic accidents, industrial accidents, oral cancer, congenital diseases and infections. “If the patient does not receive timely and proper specialist treatment, even his life may be at risk,” he warned.

Hospital with state-of-the-art facilities

This new hospital to be built in Chabahil will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities. The hospital will have a modern operation theatre, 3-D digital imaging and scanning services, in-house laboratory, ICU and emergency room, anesthesia department, facial trauma unit and operative recovery ward.

According to Dr. Ghimire, the hospital aims to provide “complete maxillofacial care” at the Nepali level. All oral and facial surgeries, from complex to routine, will be provided under one roof.

Continuation of community-based dental services

O’N Samaj Dental Hospital has been providing affordable, reliable and accessible dental services in places including Chabahil, Nakap, Banshali, Satdobato and Bardibas for the past few years. The organization has been maintaining the trust of the society through regular free health camps, public awareness programs and quality treatment at low cost.

Once the new hospital comes into operation, it will be Nepal’s first dedicated oral and maxillofacial hospital. It is expected to usher in a new era in the healthcare sector by providing world-class treatment to thousands of Nepali patients in their own country.
