KIST Medical College Hospital Organizes ‘Organ Donor Honor Program’

Kathmandu . KIST Medical College Hospital, through its KIST Transplant Center, organized a grand “Organ Donor Honor Program” on Wednesday to recognize and express gratitude toward individuals who contributed to saving lives through organ donation. According to the hospital, more than 200 organ donors were honored during the event.

 

The program was inaugurated by Chiri Babu Maharjan, Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City and Chairperson of the Valley Mayors’ Forum. Speaking at the event, he described organ donation as one of the greatest acts of humanity and said organ donors are true heroes of society. “A single organ donation can give another person a new life. Such noble work should be further encouraged throughout society,” he said. He also praised KIST Medical College Hospital for its significant contribution to transplant services in Nepal’s private healthcare sector.

 

According to the hospital, KIST Medical College Hospital, located in Gwarko, has remained a leading institution in transplant services within the private sector over the past five years, maintaining a high success rate. The hospital stated that it has successfully completed 202 kidney transplants and 15 liver transplants so far, providing patients with what it described as a “second life.” It also claimed to be the private hospital performing the highest number of organ transplants in Nepal.

 

The hospital further informed that it has received NABH accreditation, recognizing its healthcare service quality at an international standard. KIST has been successfully performing simultaneous kidney and liver transplants, paired organ exchange transplants between two families, and minimally invasive transplant surgeries using laparoscopic technology.

 

KIST Medical College Hospital also stated that it was the first hospital in Nepal to successfully perform simultaneous kidney and liver transplant surgery. According to the hospital, this achievement has also been mentioned in the National Joint Annual Review Report 2079/80 published by the Ministry of Health and Population.

 

The hospital shared that among transplant recipients so far, the oldest patient was 80 years old while the youngest was 19. It also highlighted a case where an 80-year-old woman diagnosed with cancer was still medically eligible for organ donation, ultimately helping save the life of a relative through her donated organ.

 

The event witnessed the participation of distinguished personalities from various sectors, healthcare professionals, transplant specialists, patients, and organ donors. The hospital stated that several mayors from the Kathmandu Valley and high-ranking government officials were also present at the program.
